What skills do workers need to update to facilitate the transition from traditional to industrialised construction

The #BuildOffsiteEU project partners have elaborated a Map of new skills that some profiles should update in order to adapt their professional performance to the demands of industrialised construction

Industrialised construction requires some professional profiles to update their professional skills. To this end, the #BuildOffsiteEU project partners have carried out more than 100 surveys to construction companies and other stakeholders in Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Spain to find out about skills upgrading needs and to facilitate the transition from traditional to industrialised construction:

  • Electrical installer.
  • HVAC engineering technician.
  • Roof labourer.
  • Building construction labourer.

The partnership agreed on the analysis of these four groups of occupational profiles because they cover wide areas of activities and tasks in traditional construction and, therefore, their skills are key in the construction sector.

The results of this European survey show a series of skills and competences that these professional profiles should update in order to make the transition to industrialised construction, especially in aspects related to digitalisation, the circular economy and energy efficiency, by displaying them on the Map of new skills.

Some of the skills that respondents rated as most in need of updating for a successful transition and included in the Map of ‘new skills’ are: sort waste and demolition materials; use of new techniques such as green roofs; interpretation of 2D and 3D digital plans; use of BIM modelling; and follow health and safety procedures in construction.
