Upcoming Typologies for Replacement Housing Post-2023 Summer Floods in Slovenia

In response to the devastating floods in Slovenia on 4 August 2023, a notable initiative involves a collaboration involving multiple Slovenian ministries and the RS Service for Restoration from Floods and Landslides. This project aims to develop and implement new housing typologies specifically designed for quick deployment in disaster-affected areas. The focus is on creating sustainable, affordable housing solutions that can be rapidly assembled, offering immediate relief to affected communities and setting a new standard for disaster response. The results of this ambitious project will be presented at a public event on May 23, 2024, at Gospodarsko razstavišče in Ljubljana, aiming to engage local companies and the public in a collaborative rebuild effort. More information about this event and the project’s goals is available here.
An event is scheduled for May 23, 2024, at Gospodarsko razstavišče in Ljubljana, which will discuss the results of a competition for replacement housing typologies following the 2023 floods. This initiative involves collaboration with the RS Service for Restoration from Floods and Landslides, the Ministry for a Solidarity Future, and the Ministry of Economy, among others.
The Ministry for a Solidarity Future, in cooperation with the Slovenian Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning, has launched a competition to select the most professionally appropriate solutions for replacement housing suitable for people whose homes were destroyed by the catastrophic floods of 2023.
By designing the competition to provide houses of the right size for the needs and selecting building typologies that fit more efficiently into the space, we will enable a better, more sustainable use of space. In doing so, the Ministry is pursuing the principle that the design of the replacement housing selected through the competition will minimise the impact on the environment as far as possible. Replacement housing buildings that are rational in terms of floor space and adapt as much as possible to people’s requirements will also take into account regional and micro-location specificities.
The primary aim of the competition, which closes on 21 March 2024, is to provide people affected by the floods with an affordable, quality replacement home that is available for occupation as soon as possible. The Ministry of Solidarity for the Future decided to launch the competition after realising that there was no suitable offer on the market that would meet people’s needs for a good quality new home in the circumstances. In parallel to this, we also took into account the development component, as we are aware that post-flood reconstruction also offers an opportunity for more environmentally appropriate solutions in the area.
